Fibre rupture

Physiotherapy

What is a fibre rupture and how is it treated?

Muscle fibre rupture is one of the most common injuries, especially in active people or athletes. It occurs when the fibres that make up a muscle are partially or completely torn, usually as a result of overexertion, sudden movement or overloading without adequate warm-up.

What does a fibre rupture feel like?

The pain is usually sharp, localised and sudden, sometimes accompanied by a "whiplash" or "stabbing" sensation in the affected muscle. In more severe cases there may be bruising, swelling and difficulty in moving the injured area.

Where do they occur most frequently?

The most common areas are the hamstrings, quadriceps, calf muscles and adductors, although it can occur in any muscle group under stress.

What types of breakage are there?

Grade I (micro-tear): Mild pain, discomfort when stretching or contracting the muscle.

Grade II (partial tear): Moderate pain, swelling and partial loss of strength.

Grade III (complete rupture): Severe pain, obvious haematoma and functional impossibility.

Physiotherapeutic treatment

In our clinic, treatment is adapted to the stage of the injury:

Acute phase: We apply techniques to control inflammation and pain, such as cryotherapy, functional bandaging or kinesiotaping.

Recovery phase: We incorporate manual therapy, diathermy (such as Medestec), dry needling if necessary, and progressive therapeutic exercises.

Readaptation phase: We work to recover strength, elasticity and prevent relapses with functional re-education and postural work.

Each treatment is individualised and designed according to the severity of the tear, the patient's history and functional needs.

When to see a physiotherapist?

At the slightest sign of pain or suspicion of rupture, it is important not to strain the injured muscle and to seek assessment as soon as possible. Early diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan are key to a safe and effective recovery.
